When a group of students heard the high-pitched whine of an angle grinder outside McMahon Hall before dawn on a Friday morning, they knew something was wrong.
After spotting a man trying to cut a bike lock, the students called 911. UW Police Department officers quickly responded.
The man, police believe, was trying to steal an e-scooter. He tried to run, but officers stopped him and arrested him for attempted theft. The man, who also had a warrant out for his arrest on other charges, was booked into the King County Jail.
Thank you to the students who noticed something off and called it in! If you see something suspicious, please call UWPD. You might be able to stop a thief or prevent someone from getting hurt. Call 911 for immediate danger or a crime in progress. If you have questions or a less urgent concern, call the UWPD non-emergency number, 206-685-8973 (UWPD).
