UWPD accreditation team invites public comment – submit by April 18

A Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) team will visit the UW Police Department March 10-12 as part of an assessment to determine whether UWPD meets 532 standards to qualify for reaccreditation.

CALEA requires agencies to comply with standards in four areas: policies and procedures, administration, operations and support services.

CALEA is also accepting public comments about UWPD from students, faculty staff and the public.

The UWPD is the first and only university law enforcement agency in Washington state accredited by CALEA. UWPD has been CALEA accredited since 2005 and is also accredited by Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs. UWPD is one of more than 1,200 law enforcement agencies in the United States accredited by CALEA.

“This visit is an opportunity to demonstrate how the UWPD’s work upholds our PRIDE values: professionalism, respect, integrity, diversity and excellence,” said UWPD Chief Craig Wilson.

Reaccreditation is for four years, during which time the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited in 2005 and reaccredited in 2008, 2011, 2014, 2017 and 2021. This will be the sixth reaccreditation for the UWPD.

The public can also submit written comments about the UWPD’s ability to meet the standards for reaccreditation. Comments may be anonymous or identify the writer. Send comments to: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcoat Boulevard, Suite 160, Gainesville, VA. 20155.
