Seattle, WA – It is with a heavy heart the University of Washington Police Department announces the passing of our Director of Strategy and Organizational Excellence Del Hazeley. Director Hazeley, 30, unexpectedly passed away on Monday, Oct. 16th. He is survived by his loving wife, two brothers, mother and father.
Del has been a valued member of the Department since 2012 when he was hired as the Assistant Technical Services Manager. He was quickly promoted to Information Technology Manager. Del was an integral part of the UWPD team, ensuring the planning, technology implementation, and transition to a new police building was successful. In October of 2016 he was again promoted to Director of Strategy and Organizational Excellence. As a civilian member of the department’s executive leadership team, Del leveraged his departmental experience to define the strategic direction of the UW Police Department. Director Hazeley received his undergraduate degree from Penn State University and his Master of Science in Information Management, Information Science from the University of Washington.
“Del was a beloved team member of the Department,” said Chief John Vinson. “Although he was a civilian member of a law enforcement agency, he was dedicated to finding ways to reduce crime for our community. He quickly became the model for professionalism and integrity in our workplace, striving to make a difference in our community at every opportunity. His humor, composure in stressful situations, and leadership will be greatly missed by all in the department.”
As a friend to all he met, he was respected not just by his colleagues at UWPD, but by the larger University of Washington community.
