This message is being communicated to all faculty, staff and Seattle campus students with the approval of the UW Police Department. This message is sent in the interest of public safety and in compliance with federal law requiring timely warning notification of crimes committed on or near campus. This is not a UW Alert message. On Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2021, at about 5:38 a.m., UWPD officers responded to reports of a man who started a fire in a second-floor restroom in Maple Hall. The suspect started the fire in a trash can by burning paper towels in the restroom. When a witness confronted the suspect, he immediately left the restroom and ran from the building. The witness extinguished the fire with an extinguisher he located nearby. There were no injuries or damage to property.

The suspect was described as a man in his 30s, about 5-foot-11 with a skinny build, wearing a beanie and dark clothing.

This case is being investigated by the University of Washington Police under case #2021-00029812 and the Seattle Fire Department under case #2021-115985.

  • Clothing descriptors- look for layers under the visible layer, other distinctive design identifiers, etc.
  • Physical characteristics – height, weight, eyes, hair, mannerisms, scars/tattoos
  • Direction of travel (by foot or automobile)
